Researchers at Cambridge and Oxford universities believe both scientists displayed signs of Asperger's syndrome.

Many people with Asperger's are often regarded as being eccentric. They sometimes lack social skills, are obsessed with complex topics and can have problems communicating.

This latest research suggests that Einstein, who discovered the theory of relativity, and Newton, who discovered the laws of gravity, had these traits to varying degrees.

According to the researchers, Einstein showed signs of Asperger's from a young age.

As a child, he was a loner and often repeated sentences obsessively until he was seven years old. He was also a notoriously confusing lecturer.

Later in life, the German-born scientist made intimate friends, had numerous affairs and spoke out on political issues.

'Passionate'

However, the researchers insist that he continued to show signs of having Asperger's.

"Passion, falling in love and standing up for justice are all perfectly compatible with Asperger's syndrome," Professor Simon Baron-Cohen of Cambridge, one of those involved in the study, told New Scientist magazine.

"What most people with Asperger's Syndrome find difficult is casual chatting - they can't do small talk."

The researchers believe that Newton displayed classic signs of the condition.

He hardly spoke, was so-engrossed in his work that he often forgot to eat and was lukewarm or bad-tempered with the few friends he had.

If no one, turned up to his lectures he gave them anyway talking to an empty room. At the age of 50, he had a nervous breakdown brought on by depression and paranoia.

However, others believe these traits can be attributed to both men's high intelligence.

'Socially inept'

"One can imagine geniuses who are socially inept and yet not remotely autistic," said Dr Glen Elliott, a psychiatrist at the University of California at San Francisco.

"Impatience with the intellectual slowness of others, narcissism and passion for one's mission in life might combine to make such an individuals isolative and difficult."

He told the magazine that Einstein was regarded as having a good sense of humour - a trait not seen in people with severe Asperger's.

Professor Baron-Cohen said the findings suggested that people with the syndrome can excel if they find their niche in life.

"This condition can make people depressed or suicidal, so if we can find out how to make things easier for them, that's worthwhile."

The BBC reports.. that the driver of what appears to be the fastest speeding car driver (156.7mph!) will have to wait the background reports to hear what sentence he will recieve. Mr McAllister a car dealer had pleaded guilty to the charge of dangerous driving and dirving without insurance but has had to wait for reports from the court service so that a balanced decision can be made - the case was adjourned for another three weeks.

more horror stories about the Inland Revenue.. and tax credits.

heres one for all you good employers out there...

The DTI has laid down procedures which, if not followed correctly to the letter, could end in an employer losing a tribunal case - even if he/she had a good business case for refusing flexible working.

There is the matter of the other employees who may end up covering for absent colleagues

The procedures are laid out in a 56-page booklet (gripping bedtime reading - believe me).

They comprise having to take the request seriously, following through internal grievance procedures if the employee is not happy with a refusal, then maybe going through external mediation procedures and then maybe to an employment tribunal.

what am i talking about?

Before long "the right to request flexible working" could become "the right to flexible working".

is that enough of a clue? no? well here you are... Worksmart the new rules that are striking terror into the hearts of employers up and down the country who do not have robust and well defined policy and procedures in place..

OH WELL - lol

BBC has picked up on the tax credit mess finally - asked them a while back to do a piece on it...

Q: How many Al-Sahaf's does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: There is no need to change the lightbulb. It glows brilliantly, basking in the power of the wholly intact and fully functional local power station. The room is not dark, and there is no bruise on your knee from the furniture you didn't walk into - Allah be Praised!

heres another gripe at the Inland Revenue regarding the Child Tax credit system

To whom it may concern,

Our initial contact with you was through the online service; we completed the form and followed the instructions to the best of our ability. At some point we must have missed or else it wasn’t there, the part that let us tell you about my disability living allowance. Therefore the tax credit notice that we received was very different from the one we were expecting. I repeatedly tried to contact you, at first we kept getting the engaged tone, however over the days this attempt to contact you took, things changed, we started to be able to connect (great) only to be told we still hadn’t got through and to call back later. Am I paying to be told this? I sincerely hope not, as this means you are making a lot money from this service. What about the people who have to use payphones, this connection that tells you, you still haven’t got through is costing them 20p a time. How can you justify this?
Eventually after a lot of serious frustration, I got through, spoke to someone who changed the information on my claim, they gave me an indication as to what we should expect and that we would receive confirmation in the post. During our conversation it became apparent to me that whom ever I was speaking to had no in depth knowledge of the tax credit and was therefore unable to answer all of my questions, they did admit that all they were doing was entering information into the computer and reading back to me what ever was on the screen. How does this level of service really constitute the name ‘helpline’.
So I waited for a few weeks. When I still hadn’t received the updated award I started to worry. Mainly because I had no faith in the system you have implemented and I did question whether my information really had been updated. Then I tried to ring again, this time I rang on a Saturday, thinking that this day possibly might be quieter, how wrong I was, the rest of the country obviously has the same idea, maybe after trying and failing to get through to you in the week. I connected so many times I lost count, only to be told the call volume was too high and to call back later. I would say up to that point you made a few pounds out of me. Eventually I got through and was asked to select a number to be put through to, I think I selected 3. I spoke to a man who took my details but could not answer my questions as he said he had not got access to the award information, and that I would have to call back and select 5. How absolutely stupid is this that only one selectable number (5) has access to award information. It’s beyond me to put into words how frustrated I was. I dutifully hung up and tried again, I rang and rang sometimes getting BT (for free) and sometimes having to pay you to tell me I still couldn’t speak to anyone. Eventually I got through to select the number 5, the department I wanted to speak to, so I pressed 5, and then I was told the caller volume was too high and to try again later. I could not believe it. I refused to give up. I felt so angry I was determined to speak to someone. So I tried again several times making you more money. I eventually got through I selected 5 and held my breath but I had finally succeeded and I was through. I waited and I waited all the time thinking what a total fiasco it had been trying to get the information I wanted. Then I decided to write to you to complain. I am sure you will receive lots of complaints and you really should take them seriously because if you have managed to upset me so much that I will write to you, then you really are upsetting a lot of people. On a ‘likes to complain’ scale of 1 to 10 I would normally score a 2 but I tell you today I scored an 11. Anyway I waited 25 minutes for you to answer my call and I got to ‘helpline’ in my letter before I spoke to someone. I don’t know if you recorded it or not but please listen to it if you did. Anyway she answered my queries concerning my tax credit award. Due to my extreme frustration I did ask her if she knew if we were getting charged for all these so called connections that tell you to try again later and very diplomatically she said she didn’t know. I’m glad she didn’t know because I don’t think I really wanted her to confirm my worst fears about the money someone is making on all these calls.
Well if your in the least bit interested, you should know that when you are kept on hold waiting to speak to a department the automated voice cuts in too many times, to explain the high caller volume and that maybe you should try again later (so we can make some more money out of you) and it should in my opinion tell you, you are in a queue where you are in that queue and that your call will be answered shortly or as soon as possible. At the very least you need to invest in more people to answer the calls.
I would appreciate a letter confirming receipt of this complaint at the very least, but please feel free to write to ask for more information or to tell me you have addressed the issues raised. I sincerely hope I never have to ring the helpline again. As you can tell from this letter I am able to speak up for myself and can communicate with others at an appropriate level, I feel for the many people who cannot and are not able to get their questions answered or are cut off because they could not cope with the level of frustration they felt when they actually get to speak to someone. This all seems like a lot of hard work to be able to receive money we used to get automatically, and I just don’t see how it is fairer. To me it seems to discriminate against those people who do have difficulties communicating on whatever level. I am absolutely certain there will be many who do not receive the award they are entitled to because of this bureaucracy gone mad.

Copy of letter sent today after hanging on and wasting money on BT.

Passive smoking at work kills three people every day, according to research.
The study found that around 900 office workers, 165 bar workers and 145 manufacturing workers die each year as a direct result of breathing in other people's tobacco smoke at work.

It also found that there are three times as many deaths a year from passive smoking at work as there are from workplace injuries.

It is estimated that three million people in the UK are exposed to second-hand smoke while at work.

Study was carried out by James Repace, who has previously conducted research into passive smoking for the California Department of Health.

He said: "More people died in 2002 from passive smoking at work in the UK than were killed by the Great London smog of 1952.

"This study shows that previous research has seriously underestimated the number of people killed by second-hand smoke at work."

Call for action

The findings will be highlighted at a conference on the effects of workplace smoking this week organised by the anti-smoking charity ASH, the TUC, and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

The conference will call on the government to implement a legally binding Code of Practice for workplace smoking, proposed over two years ago by the Health and Safety Commission.

This would clarify how existing health and safety law applies to passive smoking, effectively banning smoking from the vast majority of workplaces.

Campaigners say the UK is lagging behind other countries in this area.

Lawyers at the conference will warn that employers could face lawsuits if they fail to protect staff from passive smoke.

Amanda Sandford, a spokesperson for ASH, said: "The government's failure to tackle passive smoking in the workplace is scandalous.

"How many more lives are going to be lost before they act? One death caused by passive smoking is unacceptable but more than 1,000 a year is a disgrace and for every day¿s delay the government has deaths on its conscience."

The CIEH is the organisation which represents health inspectors who would be responsible for enforcing a code of conduct in service sector workplaces, such as offices, hotels, pubs and clubs.

Its president Brian Hanna said: "Environmental Health Officers want to help protect workers vulnerable to passive smoking, but they need the government to provide them with the right tools to do the job.

"Relying on weak voluntary arrangements will simply not have the desired effect."

A German was trapped for hours in his folding sofa bed after it sprang shut on him when he tried to get something out of it, police in the western town of Kenzingen said.

"Unfortunately, he was so stuck that he couldn't move," a police spokesman said.

It was only after he had been knocking and shouting for several hours that neighbours in his apartment block alerted police and he was taken to hospital.

From April, employees will be able to ask what their colleagues who hold similar positions are paid.

Under the provisions of the Equal Pay Act, an employee can ask for salary details and other details about a 'comparator'. That is someone who does, or has done the same kind of job.

The employer must respond within eight weeks.

Although certain requests can be denied under data-protection law, the information must be supplied if the comparator provides consent or is it is ordered by an employment tribunal.

For further information visit the Department for Trade and Industry HERE.

before he died .Since then I have been in charge of his business and I have got no problem with that since I have been doing that before
his death.I received a letter from his bank notifying me of his account in one
of the banks in Nigeria that worth 47.5 Million dollars which he got from a computer deal he did with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
As a result of this notification I have wrote a letter through my Lawyer to the bank to transfer the Money to AIR BURN SECURITY AND

this .
I know that this issue is a very sensitive one and it should not be discuss on the net. .Why dont you send me your phone # and your Fax

the tax credits saga rolls on?

after being unable to contact the offices - 0845 300 3900 all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday... permermantly engaged, i managed to get through to the office this morning to be told 'sorry we cannot answer you call at the moment'!
great so now its cost me 5p to connect and be told to ring back... i ring again and after 6 times of the same message and 35p later i get a different message - press one etc now i pressed 5 to speak about my existing claim then i get told by the machine that they are unable to speak to me again another 10p due to the length of the call..

absolutely dreadful and for a service that is supposed to give you money (if eligible) for them to take the money from you via the phone system is terrible. how are people who use payphones supposed to contact and resolve the issues.

but my award went from £869 to £3k which makes a big difference.

i don't know why the difference is so great and guess what neither did the woman on the helpline, she 'just puts the figure into the computer and the computer gives the answer'!

so my tips would be only ring if its not at a peak time - 16:40 thru 17:20 and 18:00 thru 20:00

Tax Credits..
change for the better or worse?

after recieving the information and the assessment based on my earnings for last year, i cannot believe the differences in the rules about this tax benefit.
if i dont return the form i will lose the credits, if i start to live with someone i have to tell the inland revenue, if i go on holiday for 8 weeks or more i have to tell the IR, if i have a baby, if i have a death in the family, if i get housing benefit, council tax benefit, if my child care costs go up and or down, if my income goes down or up, if one of my children is imprisoned, if my hours of work increase, decrease or when combined with my partner they increase or decrease etc..

if i could get through on the helpline i might be able to do any of the above..

sorry for the rant but i think that this is going to have a huge impact on the majority of the form fearing public.

interested in the original game of grand theft auto?

you are.. read on

ok well rockstargames the makers of the grand theft auto series are giving away the game free of charge...

no its not a joke go here and sign up so you can receive the email containing the download address

it is 384 megs in size but i can assure you its worth it :)

stumbled across another worthy reference site this morning..
http://www.drugdigest.org is worth a visit, although a US based site the generic names work for all medicines and the contra indicators that are listed are well worth the visit and bookmark...

Toilet loopy

The loopy loo loophole has gotta go!

Under Britain's crazy workplace welfare laws, every employer has got to provide access to a loo - but they can also stop you from using it! TUC and Hazards believe when you've gotta go, you've gotta go. We want:

? HSE to clarify rest break requirements to state explicitly that in all but exceptional circumstances workers can choose to go to the loo when they want. There should be sufficient workers to provide relief, so the employer can let you go.

? DTI to amend the law so peeing is not a privilege, but a right on paid work time.

? Employers to respect our privacy and our right to go without docking our pay, and to provide clean and adequate facilities.

? Employers' organisations and government agencies to join unions in campaigning to get employers to show some respect at work.

Subject: Fw: The Price of Petrol

Ladies and gents,
A little long winded this but if it all helps to get us UK drivers cheaper motoring, then read on.....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are going to hit close to 89p a litre by the summer.
Want petrol prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent,
united action.

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a
certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May!
The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we
wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy petrol.
It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for
them.

BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that
can really work. Please read it and join in! By now you're
probably thinking petrol priced at about 77p a litre is super
cheap. Me too! It is currently 79p - 83p for regular unleaded
in some towns.

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned
us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need
to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
marketplace.... not sellers. With the price of petrol going up
more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we
are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone
in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that
WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying petrol.
But we CAN have an impact on petrol prices if we all act together to
force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol
from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.
If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce
their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will
have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally
millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now,
don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain
how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it
to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at
least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message
reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE
MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on
to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If
it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION
PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not
buy at ESSO/BP) (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million
and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... well, let's face
it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am... so trust me on this
one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to
ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could
conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't
think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we
can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this
message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
Action:
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your
petrol
at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso
